The Mystery of History

The History group meets every four weeks at Hasbury Methodist Church. We meet on Wednesdays from 12.30 to 2.00. We begin with a brief look at some Events from History for the relevant month before having presentations from group members. As a group we decide on a topic and members who wish to do so volunteer to present their research to the group.

The presentations are usually about 10 minutes but may be shorter or longer depending on the topic. A recent topic was the History of a Town and Lincoln, Sheffield, Kidderminster and Halesowen were a few of the selected areas of research.

Previous topics have included Prime Ministers and also local people, including Duncan Edwards, William Shenstone, Dud Dudley and the Cadbury family. Castles and large houses within 60 miles of Halesowen was another area of research. This has given us plenty of inspiration for days out. Canals was our next choice and we completed the topic with a visit to Dudley Canal Trust. It was a most enjoyable visit, with a delicious lunch at the cafe and an interesting and informative commentary while exploring the tunnel.

Our current topic is Notable Women and we are looking forward to some interesting presentations. Choices so far have included Margaret Hutchinson, Josephine Cochrane and Louisa Ryland

We share recommendations for books, films, television programmes and history in the news.

We try to do local visits and have had a guided tour of Halesowen Church. We also had a visit to St Kenelm’s at Romsley which was led by Julian Hunt.
